Switching Module Installation
After you have unpacked and counted your products, and gathered your tools and supplies, the first step in
assembling your System is to mount and connect the Switching Modules.
1. Organize Your Switching System Into Chains
Sort the Switching Modules and related cables according to the Chains they will be switching. (Source
Chain, Amplifier Chain, Speaker Chain etc. – see pages 13 and 24-26 for more information on Chains).
2. Set the DIP Switches
DIP switches are located at the top of the Modules. These are used to assign component selection numbers
to the individual Switching Modules. Use the DIP switch setting guide which are located in Appendix A.
When two or more Modules are required to switch one component, set their DIP Switches for the same
component selection numbers and then treat them as one unit. Be sure to use the same Position numbers
when labeling the relays and connecting wires to terminals.
3. Label the Switching Modules
On the white label area at the bottom of each Module, label the Module with its Chain name (component
type) and its location within the Chain (e.g. “Rear Amp-2” to indicate the second Switching Module in the
Rear Amp Chain). If there is a double set of terminals on a Switching Module, label each side on the white
label area just above the terminals to indicate what is connected to that set of terminals – input or output,
front, center, rear, etc.
Each set of terminals, or “positions,” is already marked with a capital letter from “A” through “H.” “A”
represents the first Position on the Module and “H” represents the last. As DIP switches are set on each
Switching Module, it is advisable to write component selection numbers on top of the corresponding relays
next to each component’s connection terminals with an indelible pen, as illustrated in Figure 34, page 63.
4. Installing Speaker Coil Shorting Jumpers
To help arrest out-of-phase cone vibration of unselected Speakers during audio demonstrations, some of
MTi’s high-level Switching Modules contain a feature that causes a short in Speakers that are not selected.
Jumpers (see page 71) should be placed on the Speaker Coil Shorting Pins for Speaker switching and left off
when switching other components. Jumpers may be ordered from MTi (Part Number 010-0013-00.)
(Older models of MTi Switching Modules may have solder dots that can have shorting wires attached to
them, or MTA connectors which have been connected with wires, called Speaker Breaks.)
