Appendix B - Power Supply Requirement Worksheet
In car audio displays the power supply is often given little thought. The impact of power on the sound
performance of the audio components can be far ranging. The typical choices: either using batteries with a
charger or using 12V DC power supplies. MTi recommends power supplies. Batteries contain gases corrosive
to electronic circuitry; there is always the chance of acid spillage and, in rare instances, explosions.
Additionally, the chargers are sometimes “noisy.” Power supplies have none of these drawbacks.
With the simple, 3-step procedure outlined below, you can determine the current requirements, in amperes,
of any car audio Switching System. If the Switching System is underpowered, the Amplifiers (especially in Bi-
or Tri-Amplifier systems) will tax the power source and sound weak and distorted. A car audio display can
never have too much power.
Step 1 Add together the total watt ratings of the largest Front, Rear, and Subwoofer
Amplifiers that could be playing together.
Example: 2-Ch front Amplifier: 200 watts (100/channel)
2-Ch rear Amplifier: 200 watts (100/channel)
2-Ch sub Amplifier: 300 watts (150/channel)
Total: 700 watts
To be safe, assume that all amps run at 50% efficiency (although some are more efficient).
So, double the figure from above.
700.0 watts x 2= 1400 watts
