TROUBLESHOOTING ALTERNATOR SYSTEM
Trouble Cause Remedy
Field circuit breaker trips. Intermittent short circuit. Internal short circuit of the
(cont.) field can occur at various
positions of the rotor,
therefore, reconnect field,
reset breaker.
W
ARNING: TURN MAGNETO SWITCH TO OFF BEFORE TURNING PROP.
Pull propeller slowly by
hand turning alternator
rotor through 360 of travel.
Observe circuit breaker for
signs of tripping.
Output circuit breaker trips. Short in output circuit. Disconnect wiring at
battery post of alternator.
Turn master switch ON.
Reset breaker. If breaker
continues to trip,
disconnect each leg of
output circuit, working from
the alternator towards the
circuit breaker, until breaker
holds when reset. Replace
component or wire isolated
as defective.
Shorted alternator diode. Disconnect wiring at
battery post of alternator.
Turn master switch ON.
Reset breaker. If breaker
fails to trip again, have
alternator overhauled or
diode replaced.
Battery installed with Remove battery and install
reversed (positive ground) with correct (negative
polarity. ground) polarity.
Battery charged backwards. Remove battery. Connect
load, such as landing light,
and discharge battery.
Charge with correct
polarity. Test each cell for
signs of damage due to
reversed charging.
NOTE: Such a condition can only occur if battery has been removed from
airplane and charged with polarity reversed.
