2. Balancing (See Control Surface Balancing, 55-00-00, and Figure 1.) (PIR-PPS50015, Rev. AC.)
WARNING: ALL CONTROL SURFACES THAT HAVE BEEN REPLACED, REPAINTED, OR REPAIRED
AS AUTHORIZED IN THIS MANUAL, MUST BE BALANCED BEFORE INSTALLATION.
To balance the rudder, the assembly must be complete including the tip assembly with all attaching
screws and position light wiring. Place complete assembly horizontally on knife edge support in a draft-
free area in a manner that allows unrestricted movement. Place tool on rudder with beam perpendicular
to hinge centerline. Calibrate tool as described in Control Surface Balancing - Balancing Equipment,
55-00-00. Read scale when bubble level has been centered by adjustment of moveable weight and
determine static balance limit. If static balance is not within limits given in Figure 1, proceed as follows:
A. Leading Edge Heavy: This condition is highly improbable; recheck calculations and measurements.
B. Trailing Edge Heavy: This condition is caused by a light balance weight or a heavy rudder as a
result of paint or repairs. A light balance weight is highly improbable because it is enclosed in
fiberglass, see Figure 1, Section A-A. Paint build-up must be stripped and surface repainted. If the
rudder is too heavy as a result of repairs, the repairs must be removed and damaged parts
replaced.
