TROUBLESHOOTING ENGINE
Trouble Cause Remedy
Failure of engine to start. Lack of fuel. Check fuel system for leaks.
Fill fuel tank. Clean dirty lines,
strainers, or fuel cocks.
Underpriming. Prime with two or three
strokes of primer.
Overpriming. Open throttle and “unload”
engine by turning propeller
(crankshaft) in a
counterclockwise direction.
Incorrect throttle setting. Open throttle to one-tenth
of its range.
Defective spark plugs. Clean and adjust or replace
spark plug or plugs. Refer
to Lycoming Service
Instruction No. 1042 for
spark plug gap adjustment.
Defective ignition wire. Check with electric tester
and replace any defective
wires.
Magneto not operating properly. Check timing of magnetos.
Internal failure. Check oil sump screen for
metal particles. If present,
complete overhaul of the
engine may be indicated.
Check with engine
manufacturer.
Improper switch wiring for Reverse magneto switch
left magneto starting. wires.
Magnetized impulse coupling Demagnetize impulse
couplings on left magneto.
Frozen spark plug electrodes. Replace spark plugs or dry
out removed plugs.
Mixture control in idle cut-off. Open mixture control.
Shorted ignition switch or loose Check and replace or
ground. repair.
Failure of engine to idle Incorrect carburetor idle Adjust throttle stop to
properly. adjustment. obtain correct idle.
Idle mixture. Adjust mixture. Refer to
engine manufacturer’s
handbook for proper
procedure.
