Configure Routing Interfaces
Configuring Interfaces in the Cisco IOS XR Software
The four general steps to configure any interface are:
1. Specify the interface “instance” (type rack/slot/module/port).
2. Configure a network address (IP address) for the interface.
3. Configure any details required by or desired for the interface.
4. Activate the interface.
This section provides the following guidelines and information to perform basic configuration of an
interface:
• Specifying the Interface “Instance”, page 7-11
• Displaying the Interface Instance with Online Help (?), page 7-13

Specifying the Interface “Instance”
To configure an interface, you must first specify the physical interface instance or a virtual interface
instance with the interface type instance command. The syntax for the interface “instance” is
rack/slot/module/port, which specifies the path, through the router, to the port of the interface (see
Figure 7-8).
