Chapter 6 Managing Cisco IOS XR Software Packages
Overview of Software Packages
To upgrade a package, you activate a newer version of the package on one or more cards. After the
automatic compatibility checks have passed, the new version is activated, and the old version is
deactivated.
To downgrade a package, you activate an older version of the package. After the automatic compatibility
checks have passed, the older version is activated, and the newer version is deactivated.
Available Packages
Figure 6-1 shows the available Cisco IOS XR software packages. These packages are distributed in
Package Installation Envelope (PIE) files. See the “Where to Obtain Installable PIE Files” section on
page 6-15 for information on obtaining PIE files.
