This chapter provides a basic discussion of the components, capabilities, software, and hardware of the
Cisco CRS-1 router.

Basic System Configurations
Three basic configurations of the Cisco CRS-1 router system exist:
• The Cisco CRS-1 16-Slot Line Card Chassis, which is a single-chassis system that supports up to
16 modular services cards (MSCs, which are also called line cards) and provides up to 1.28 terabits
per second (Tbps) of routing total I/O capacity.
• The Cisco CRS-1 8-Slot Line Card Chassis, which is a single-chassis system that supports up to 8
MSCs and provides up to 640 gigabits per second (Gbps) of routing total I/O capacity.
• The multiple-chassis system, which comprises multiple line-card chassis interconnected by one or
more fabric chassis.
Figure 1-1 illustrates the difference between single- and multiple-chassis systems.
Note Cisco IOS XR software Releases 2 and 3 support single-chassis systems only.
