Hardware Prerequisites and Documentation
Before a system can be brought up and configured for routing, all required hardware must be installed
and functional. The following sections include a summary of the hardware documentation provided by
Cisco Systems to perform site planning and installation tasks:

• Site Planning, Equipment Unpacking, and Router Installation, page 4-2
Hardware Component and Architecture Overview
Before you begin installation and configuration of a new Cisco CRS-1 router, you should be familiar
with the hardware and software concepts and systems that comprise a Cisco CRS-1 router. Refer to the
following information for an overview of the hardware and software concepts:
• Chapter 1, “Getting Started on the Cisco CRS-1 Router,” provides a brief introduction to the major
components and architectural concepts of the system.
• The Cisco CRS-1 Series Carrier Routing System 16-Slot Line Card Chassis System Description
provides a more comprehensive summary of the Cisco CRS-1 router that supports 16 MSCs,
including components such as the chassis, PLIMs, Route Processors (RPs), system controllers
(SCs), control plane elements, and switch fabric.
• The Cisco CRS-1 Series Carrier Routing System 8-Slot Line Card Chassis System Description
provides a more comprehensive summary of the Cisco CRS-1 router that supports 8 MSCs,
