Configure Routing Interfaces
To preconfigure an interface, enter the interface preconfigure type instance command in global
configuration mode, as shown in the following example:
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router# show interface pos 0/5/0/0
Interface not found
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router# configuration
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router(config)# interface preconfigure POS 0/5/0/0
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router(config-if)# description POS Interface
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router(config-if)# ipv4 address 1.1.1.1 255.0.0.0
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router(config-if)# exit
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:router(config)# commit label pos5preconfig
Note Do not enter the no shutdown command for new preconfigured interfaces. The no keyword removes an
existing configuration, but when you preconfigure an interface, there is no existing configuration.
OIR of Interfaces (PLIM Cards)
You can remove and insert the same type of line card in the same slot, or insert a line card in an empty
slot. The following rules apply:
If an interface is replaced by a PLIM card containing the same interface type, then the interface
configuration is saved, and can be applied to newly inserted interfaces of the same type.
Removed interfaces do not appear in the output of the show interfaces command, but appear in the
output of the show running-config command.
If a replacement PLIM has more ports than the card it replaced, the lower-numbered ports receive
the existing configurations, and the additional ports receive the default configuration (interface shut
down).
If a replacement PLIM has fewer ports than the card it replaced, the additional port configurations
are stored for possible later use.
Configuration Templates
Configuration templates allow you to create a name that represents a group of configuration commands.
After a template is defined, it can be applied to interfaces by you or by other users. As networks scale to
large numbers of nodes and ports, the ability to configure multiple ports quickly using templates can
greatly reduce the time it takes to configure interfaces.
The two primary steps in working with templates are: creating templates and applying templates. For
more information, including instructions to create and apply configuration templates, see the “Creating
Configuration Templates” section on page 3-13.
Configuring Logical Interfaces
Logical interfaces are virtual interfaces that are not associated with a physical interface. This release of
Cisco IOS XR software supports the following logical interfaces:
Loopback interface—packets routed to the loopback interface are rerouted back to the network
device.
Null interface—packets routed to a null interface are dropped.
Tunnel interface—packets are encapsulated (one protocol inside a different protocol).
