Configure Routing Interfaces
Displaying the Interface Instance with Online Help (?)
You can display the interface instances available on a router by entering the ? command as follows:
• Enter the interface ? command to display the available interface types.
• Enter the interface type ? command to display the interface instances for that interface type.
Figure 7-9 shows an example of the output for these commands. The available interface types are
displayed with the interface ? command, and the instances of the POS interfaces are displayed with the
interface pos ? command.

Preconfiguring Interfaces
You can preconfigure interfaces before they are physically installed in the router. Preconfigured
interfaces are not verified or applied until the actual interface with the matching location
(rack/slot/module) is inserted.
Preconfiguration reduces downtime when new cards are added because the configuration can be applied
instantly when the new MSC and PLIM cards are inserted. In addition, when a PLIM or MSC card is
removed, you can still see the configuration it had and make modifications, even though the physical
card is not present in the system.
When the line card is inserted, and the interfaces are created, the preconfiguration is verified. If the
verification is successful, the interface configuration is immediately applied to the router running
configuration.
Note Only physical interfaces can be preconfigured. Virtual interfaces cannot be preconfigured.
