Theory of Operation
Thermal Transfer Ribbon (TTR) is the consumable used with Thermal Transfer
Overprinters (TTO)
The ribbon is a thin film with an ink layer and special back coating
o This ink layer is used to create the printed image on packaging films when
the TTR contacts with the ‘activated’ heating elements on the Printhead
Ribbon Layers
Top coat: Aids the adhesion of the ink to
the substrate and can improve
chemical/environmental resistance
Ink layer: Produces the print
Primer: Helps make sure of consistent
release of the ink from the film
Base film: Forms a stable mechanical
carrier for the ink
Back coat: Lubricates and protects the
Printhead, reduces static electricity, and
aids the transfer of heat from the
Printhead to the ribbon. and also helps
to protect the Printhead from wear
