Pre-Installation
SmartDate X40 BFSE Version 03 November 2010
33/286
■ Substrate Types
The following substrate types are typically used in SmartDate X40 applications.
• Polypropylene (PP)
o This is the preferred substrate
• Polyethylene (PE)
o This is a more difficult substrate to
use. Print speeds are restricted to
300mm/s or less
• Paper
o Paper is normally used only with
Intermittent Printers; print quality
depends on the grade of the
paper. Only low printing speeds
are suitable
• Metalized Foil (MF)
o Metallic film conducts the heat away from the Printhead. Performance will
depend on the thickness of the film. You may need to increase the darkness
setting or a lower print speed to achieve good print quality
■ Thermal Transfer Ribbon (TTR)
Best results are obtained when the ribbon is matched
with substrate. The following table indicates which TTR
type works best with each substrate type:
As a general rule
• Start with 3820 ribbon. This will give good results
in most applications
• 5810 can provide improvements as print speed
increases
• 3510 ribbon is designed for higher speeds and can also be considered
Other specialist ribbons are available. Contact GDS for more detailed advice.
