The SmartDate X40 Continuous model normally requires an encoder to monitor the speed
of the substrate.

The encoder must accurately measure the speed of the substrate at the point of printing.
Mount the encoder so its wheel runs against the print roller.
Markem-Imaje recommends that a quadrature encoder be used; as it measures the
substrate movement in both directions making sure any backward movement is detected
when the packaging machine is stopped.
Fixed Speed Settings (Internal Encoder)
If no encoder is available and the substrate runs at a known constant speed, the SmartDate
X40 can be set to use an internal signal. The substrate speed is entered on the Controller
UI.
