Processors
Hyper-Threading, a technology developed by Intel, improves the performance of
IA-32 processors when executing multiple-processor (MP) capable operating systems
and multi-threaded applications. With this technology, one physical processor looks
like two logical processors to the operating system and applications. The two logical
processors are able to execute two separate tasks (or code streams called threads)
concurrently by using shared hardware resources.
Hyper-Threading technology is designed to improve the performance of IA-32
processors by using the multi-threaded nature of contemporary operating systems and
server applications in such a way as to increase the use of the on-chip execution
resources available in the Intel NetBurst micro-architecture. The integrated cache
subsystem results in reduced memory access times and increased throughput and
performance of the memory subsystem. Specifically, integrated Level 3 cache, which
is only available on the Xeon Processor MP, provides a high-bandwidth path to
memory, increasing throughput for large server workloads.
The ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server features the following advanced processor
technologies:
Support for up to four Intel Xeon Processors MP
Integrated cache subsystem (Level 2 Advanced Transfer cache and Integrated
Level 3 cache)
Intel NetBurst micro-architecture
Hyper-Threading technology
400-MHz front-side bus
Memory
The ProLiant DL580 Generation 2 server provides double data rate (DDR)
synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM) that can improve memory clock speed to at
least 200 MHz. It activates output on both the rising and falling edge of the system
clock rather than on just the rising edge, potentially doubling output. The ProLiant
DL580 Generation 2 server features the following advanced memory technologies:
