NOTE: The calculaons in this topic represent the maximum power requirements that you need
to budget for your MX10004 router conguraon. The power consumpon of your router will be
less than the calculated results shown here. Power consumpon will vary based on the hardware
and soware conguraon of your router, the amount of trac passing through the line cards,
and environmental variables such as room temperature.
Before you begin these calculaons:
Ensure that you understand the dierent router conguraons. See "MX10004 Components and
Conguraons" on page 11.
Ensure that you know the power requirements of dierent router components. See "Power
Requirements for MX10004 Components" on page 88.
How to Calculate the Power Consumpon of Your MX10004 Router Conguraon
Use the following procedure to determine the maximum power you need to supply to the router. To
calculate maximum system power consumpon, you rst determine the combined maximum internal
power requirements of all the router components and then divide this result by the power supply output
power.

To calculate maximum system power consumpon:
1. Determine the maximum power consumpon of the base chassis components (that is, the
components other than the line cards). Use Table 33 on page 91 if your router is congured as
either the standard base or the redundant conguraon.
