The following secons explain how to power o and remove an MX10004 router.
Power O an MX10004 Router
Before you power o a Juniper Networks MX10004 router:
• Ensure that you have taken the necessary precauons to prevent electrostac discharge (ESD)
damage. See "Prevenon of Electrostac Discharge Damage" on page 263.
• Ensure that you don’t need to forward trac through the router.
• Ensure that you have the following parts and tools available to power o the router:
• An ESD grounding strap
• An external management device such as a PC
• An RJ-45-to-DB-9 rollover cable to connect the external management device to the console port
on one of the Roung and Control Boards (RCBs)
To power o an MX10004 router:
1. Connect to the router using one of the following methods:
• Connect a management device to the console (CON) port on an RCB by following the instrucons
in "Connect an MX10004 Router to a Management Console" on page 140.
• Connect a management device to one of the two management (MGMT) ports on the RCB by
following the instrucons in "Connect an MX10004 Router to a Network for Out-of-Band
Management" on page 139.
2. Shut down Junos OS from the external management device by using the request vmhost power-off
operaonal mode CLI command followed by the request chassis cb slot
slot-number
 offline. These
commands shut down a single RCB gracefully and preserve system state informaon. When you
issued this command on a redundant system, it shuts down the partner RCB. A message appears on
the other RCB console, conrming that the operang system has halted. For example, if you want to
shut down the backup RCB, issue the command on the primary RCB. You view the output on the
backup RCB.
