MX10004 Installaon Overview
The MX10004 is a rigid sheet-metal router-chassis. It houses the other hardware components such as
the Roung and Control Boards (RCBs), Switch Fabric Boards (SFBs), power supplies, fan trays, and line
cards. The router chassis ships in a cardboard box that has a two-layer wooden pallet base. The router
chassis is bolted to the pallet base. You can install an MX10004 router in a standard 19-in. (483-mm)
equipment rack by using the supplied rack-mount kit.
Perform the following steps to install the MX10004:
1. Unpack the router following the instrucons in "Unpack the MX10004 Router" on page 108.
2. Mount the chassis in the rack following the instrucons in "Mount the Juniper Networks MX10004
Router Using the JNP10004-RMK-4POST Rack-Mount Kit" on page 120.
Because of the weight of the chassis, we recommend mounng using a mechanical li. A mechanical
li is the easiest and safest method.
3. Install the line cards following the instrucons in "Install an MX10004 Line Card in the Router
Chassis" on page 194.
4. Connect the chassis to earth ground following the instrucons in "Connect the MX10004 Router to
Earth Ground" on page 135.
5. Connect power to the power supplies following the instrucons in "Connect the MX10004 to
Power" on page 134.
6. Install the ESD front door following the instrucons in "Install the Front Door on an MX10004
Router" on page 127.
7. Connect the router to the network.
• To connect the router to a network for out-of-band management, follow instrucons in "Connect
the MX10004 Router to External Devices" on page 139.
• To connect the router to a management console, follow instrucons in "Connect an MX10004
Router to a Management Console" on page 140.
8. Congure the router following the instrucons in "Perform the Inial Conguraon for the MX10004
Router" on page 141.
9. Install oponal equipment such as the cable management system. See "Install the MX10004 Cable
Management System" on page 200.
