4.4 CHANNEL MODULE CONFIGURATION GUIDELINES
4.4.1 PHYSICAL SLOTS
The first four slots in an IMUX 2000 E1 multiplexer equipped with MA-270R Module Adapters
(electrical E1 interface) or OIAs, 2 slots in terminal mode, are reserved for Common Modules. The
remaining 14 physical slots (Slots 5 through 18), are available for channel modules.
One Expansion Shelf may be added to each IMUX 2000 Main Shelf. An Expansion Shelf provides
physical slots for up to 18 additional channel modules.
See paragraph 2.3.1 for additional information.
4.4.2 TIME SLOTS
4.4.2.1 Terminal Multiplexers
Each terminal multiplexer terminates one E1 circuit, which has 31 time slots. Because of this, the total
number of 64-Kbps time slots occupied by the channel modules in a terminal multiplexer cannot
exceed 31, regardless of the number of physical slots available.
In E1 mode, only 30 time slots are available when CAS signaling is used.
4.4.2.2 Drop/Insert Multiplexers
Each drop/insert multiplexer terminates two E1 facilities: one in the A direction and one in the B
direction. Because of this, the total number of times slots occupied by channels set up to transmit in the
"A" Direction (that is, through Drop/Insert Module A) is limited to 31 minus the number of through
time slots, regardless of the total number of physical slots available. Similarly, the total number of
times slots that can be occupied by channel modules set up to transmit in the "B" direction (that is,
through Drop/Insert Module B) is limited to 31 minus the number of through time slots, regardless
of the total number of physical slots available.
The A and B direction time slot capacities of a drop/insert multiplexer are independent of one another.
The total capacity in each direction is 31 time slots. Unused time slots in one direction cannot be added
to the time slot capacity in the other direction.
