2. Keep the terminals and the top of the battery
clean. Wash with baking soda and rinse with clean
water. Do not allow baking soda solution to enter
the cells as this will destroy the electrolytes.
3. Make sure the battery terminals are tight and the
cables are in good condition.
BATTERY (B1) TESTING
Test battery voltage as follows:
1. Set the multimeter to 20 DC volts.
2. Connect multimeter leads to battery terminals, red
(+ POS) lead to positive terminal and black
(- NEG) lead to negative terminal (Figure 10D-1).
3. Crank the engine – if battery voltage falls below 9
volts while cranking, the battery is run down or
faulty. Charge and perform test again.
4. After charging, if battery still falls below 9 volts
when the engine is cranked, the battery is proba-
bly faulty and should be load tested and replaced
if necessary.
