ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
10F-12
9. With the multimeter POS (+) lead, connect to the
white wire from the starter motor. The NEG (-)
lead should be connected to a good ground. Turn
key switch to the start position and observe the
voltage on the white wire.
If battery voltage is observed and the starter motor
did not engage, the starter solenoid is okay and
starter motor is at fault.
If no or low voltage was observed and the starter
motor did not engage, the starter solenoid is at
fault.
STARTER MOTOR (M1)
If the starter does not respond to tests, remove the
starter and bench test it as outlined below using jumper
cables:
1. Disconnect the NEG (-) battery cable.
2. Disconnect the wires from the starter assembly.
3. Remove the starter.
4. Connect the POS (+) jumper cable to the starter
motor terminal (white wire terminal) as shown in
Figure 10F-3.
Figure 10F-3. Starter Motor Test
5. Connect the other end of the POS (+) jumper
cable to the POS (+) terminal of the battery. Con-
nect the NEG (-) jumper to the NEG (-) battery ter-
minal; touch the other end of NEG (-) cable to the
starter (Figure 10F-3).
The starter motor should turn.
If the starter motor does not turn or turns slowly,
connect a multimeter set at 20 VDC to the battery
terminals and repeat Step 5.
If voltage is correct, the starter motor is faulty.
Have the starter checked by a local automotive
electrical shop.
6. If the starter motor passed the test in Step 5, con-
nect the jumper cables as follows to test the sole-
noid and starter motor.
7. Connect the positive jumper cable to the battery
terminal on the starter solenoid. Connect the other
end of the battery POS (+) post. Connect the neg-
ative jumper cable to the battery NEG (-) post.
Connect the negative jumper cable to the starter
mounting flange.
8. Connect a remote starter switch or button to the
POS (+) terminal of the battery and to the solenoid
small terminal on the starter solenoid (brown wire
terminal).
9. Push the button on the remote starter switch. The
starter solenoid should engage and the starter
motor should turn.
