ENGINE
3D-15
The inline fuel filter is mounted on the left side of
the engine to the left of the throttle cable mounting.
The fuel/water separator is mounted in the engine com-
partment on the left side above the engine. Moisture
and other foreign matter can accumulate in the fuel fil-
ter. The filter should be changed and the bowl cleaned
periodically (refer to Section 11).
Inline Fuel Filter Service
1. Shut down the engine and remove the ignition
key. Allow the engine to cool completely before
servicing.
2. Thoroughly clean the fuel filter and area surround-
ing the fuel filter (Figure 3D-13).
Figure 3D-13. Fuel Filter Components
3. Loosen the filter clamp ring.
4. Loosen the fuel filter hose clamps.
5. Remove the fuel line from the filter. Immediately
plug the hose to prevent contamination.
6. Remove the filter from the clamp. Drain the
excess fuel into an appropriate container.
7. Position the replacement filter in the filter clamp.
Tighten the clamp securely to maintain filter posi-
tion.
8. Remove the plugs and install the fuel lines on the
filter. Secure the hose with the clamps.
Fuel/Water Separator
1. Place a container underneath the fuel/water sepa-
rator and open the drain valve on the bottom of
the bowl (Figure 3D-14).
2. Clean the inside and outside of the fuel bowl and
mounting.
3. Turn the filter clamp counterclockwise to remove
the filter and bowl.
4. Turn the bowl clamp counterclockwise to remove
the bowl from the filter.
5. Inspect the bowl to filter seal and replace as nec-
essary.
CAUTION
Diesel fuel is highly flammable, handle with care.
Use an approved container with a spout that will fit
inside the fuel filler neck. Avoid using unapproved
containers to transport fuel. Keep all fuel containers
clean and closed when not in use.
WARNING
Never remove the fuel cap from the fuel tank or add
fuel when the engine is running or hot.
Do not smoke when handling fuel. Never fill or drain
the fuel tank indoors.
Do not spill fuel and always clean fuel spills immedi-
ately.
Never handle or store fuel containers near an open
flame or any device that may create sparks and
ignite the fuel or fuel vapors.
Always install and tighten the fuel cap.
