B.1.3 Formatting the CIFF Data File
Hierarchial Layout of XML Tags, Attributes and Elements
This section provides an overview of the layout of the information within the CIFF Data File
structure. This overview is provided for information only and does not represent an actual CIFF
data file.
Titles shown in bold are elements which contain sub-elements those with the '@' character as the
first letter are attributes and all others are basic elements. Elements or attributes suffixed with
the ‘*’ character are considered optional and can be safely left out of a CIFF data file if not
required. When an item is left out, the default value of the particular item is used.
Information about the use and meaning of each individual element can be found in the section
entitled “CIFF Data File Element Descriptions”.

Sample CIFF Data File
The following is a sample CIFF data file that would be used to update a User Entered Date called
“ExpiryDate” and a User Entered field called “Weight”.
<ImageData>
<Date Name=”ExpiryDate” Type=”UserEntered”>10/08/2002</Date>
<Field Name=”Weight”>160</Field>
</ImageData>
Note: XML files are free format. The formatting used above is used purely for display purposes, and the
same effect could be achieved with the following:
<ImageData><Date Name=”ExpiryDate” Type=”UserEntered”>10/08/2002</Date> <Field
Name=”Weight”>160</Field></ImageData>
The names of the tags and attributes are case-insensitive; however the attribute values are case
sensitive. You must ensure that the field and date names, match those assigned in the image
design package exactly.
