If the device that you are calling cannot support encryption, the call will not complete. Your
phone plays the fast busy tone (congestion tone) and flashes the LED on the call appearance
button and the Encrypt button flashes green (250 ms) and red (250 ms). The display changes to:
The phone shows the call appearance number and the name, number, or address of the person
you were trying to call.
The phone maintains this state until you go on hook.
7.4.2.2 Receiving a Call When Encryption is Always On or Never On
If your phone is configured so that encryption is always on and it receives a call from a device that
has encryption always on, or if your phone is configured so that encryption is always off and it
receives a call from a device that has encryption always off, your phone will answer the call. The
phone turns on the Encrypt LED on if encryption is engaged.
If your ZIP phone is configured so that encryption is always on and it receives a call from a device
that has encryption always off, or if your phone is configured so that encryption is always off and
it receives a call from a device that has encryption always on, your phone will reject the call. The
phone does not make any sound or light any LEDs. Your phone accumulates this as a missed call
(see section 6.4.4.3 on page 58). You can identify that the call was rejected as described in section
6.7.1 on page 64.
7.4.2.3 Making a Call With Encryption Normally On or Normally Off
When you enable encryption on the phone, it functions on each line independently. Therefore
you can have an encrypted call on one call appearance and a call that is not encrypted on the
other call appearance.
To encrypt a call prior to dialling:
• If the phone is configured so that encryption is normally off, press a free call appearance
button, then press the Encrypt button.
• If the phone is configured so that encryption is normally on, as soon as you start to make a call
the phone enables encryption.
The phone synchronously flashes the LEDs on the call appearance button green and the Encrypt
LED button synchronously. Dial the number using any of the methods defined for unencrypted
calls.
To encrypt a call that is already established, press the Encrypt button during the conversation.
If the other person’s phone can accept encrypted voice, the phone lights the LED on the Encrypt
button continuous green but makes no change to the display.
