OL-9639-07
Preface
Audience
This guide is for the networking professional managing the Cisco Metro Ethernet (ME) 3400 Series
Ethernet Access switch, hereafter referred to as the switch. We assume that you are familiar with the
concepts and terminology of Ethernet and local area networking. If you are interested in more training
and education in these areas, learning opportunities including training courses, self-study options,
seminars, and career certifications programs are available on the Cisco Training & Events web page:
http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/index.html
Purpose
The switch ships with one of these software images installed:
The metro base image provides basic Metro Ethernet features.
The metro access image includes additional features such as IEEE 802.1Q tunneling, Layer 2
protocol tunneling, dynamic ARP inspection, and IP source guard.
The metro IP access image adds Layer 3 functionality such as IP routing support for Routing
Information Protocol (RIP), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) Protocol, Border Gateway Protocol
(BGP), and Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), multiple VPN
routing/forwarding on customer edge (multi-VRF-CE) devices, and IP multicast routing.
This guide provides procedures for using the commands that have been created or changed for use with
the Cisco ME 3400 switch. It does not provide detailed information about these commands. For detailed
information about these commands, see the Cisco ME 3400 Ethernet Access Switch Command Reference
for this release. For information about the standard Cisco IOS commands, see the Cisco IOS
documentation available from this URL:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/tsd_products_support_category_home.html
This guide does not describe system messages you might encounter or how to install your switch. For
more information, see the Cisco ME 3400 and ME 2400 Switch System Message Guide for this release
and the Cisco ME 3400 Ethernet Access Switch Hardware Installation Guide.
