Ö
Use a direct connection (with a
cross over cable) to eliminate
any possible network related
problems.
If the direct connection test
works try pinging the SmartDate
X40 over the network to prove
the two devices can see each
other
Try connecting to the SmartDate
X40 via the SmartDate X40 web
browser
Check the network for firewalls,
programmable switches, etc. that
may block the communication

Remember: Network problems are the customer’s
responsibility unless the network was installed by
Markem-Imaje!
Pinging
Pinging is a low security request to see if a device
(IP address) is on the network and will often by
pass some firewalls and security restrictions
Click ‘Start’, ‘Run’, type ‘CMD’ and press return.
Type ping 10.0.0.15 (10.0.0.15 is the default
SmartDate X40 IP address).
A successful connections will result in a reply being
sent, such as:
Pinging 10.0.0.15 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 10.0.0.15 1: bytes=32 time<1ms
TTL=30
A failed connection will result in a time out error
message such as:
Pinging 10.0.0.15 with 32 bytes of data:
Request timed out

Use a known working external
device (e.g. laptop) to prove the
connection and SmartDate X40
are working
If the external device supports
the Telnet command, try using it
to connect to the SmartDate X40
to see a connection can be
established
If connection fails check for
anything that may be using or
blocking the port (e.g. CoLOS
connectivity service, firewall,
etc.)

To connect to the SmartDate X40, make sure that
the IP address, etc. are set correctly and if possible
bypass the network and connect a known working
external device directly to the SmartDate X40
If a known working external device successfully
connects to the SmartDate X40, and the required
external device supports the Telnet command try
using the Telnet command to connect to the
SmartDate X40
Telnet test instructions:
From the command prompt:
Click ‘Start’, ‘Run’, type ‘CMD’ and press return.
