The 501C and 501CM camera models have the Acute Matte focusing screen. The 501CM also
has the gliding mirror system (GMS), which shows the entire image on the focusing screen
with all lenses and all accessories. The original 500 and 501 models do not have a dedicated
fl ash system.
Camera Finishes
Most camera models have been available in chrome or black fi nish. The 501CM and 503CW
cameras have also been on the market in the ruby red, cobalt blue, forest green, and sun yel-
low fi nishes.
HASSELBLAD 503 CAMERA MODELS
The 503CX camera has the automatic dedicated fl ash system and a new Palpas coating on the
interior surfaces reducing the possibility for stray light reaching the image plane and creat-
ing fl are. The 503CW model also has the gliding mirror system. All 503 models have the new
Acute Matte focusing screen that provides an even brighter and sharper image than before.
This new screen makes the image fall in and out of focus in a clear and defi nite fashion for
the most accurate focusing with any lens. The screen also has a new Fresnel lens that pro-
vides even brightness over the entire screen surface. The 503CXi and the 503CW can be used
with an accessory motor winder.
Working with 503 Cameras
Whether you work with fi lm or digitally, everything you need to know about the component
interchangeability on 503 and other V system cameras, including the latest 503CW types, is
described in this chapter. More details about the camera operations that will help produce tech-
nically great pictures with 503 cameras and lenses can be found in Chapter 9, with details about
the viewing system in Chapter 7, and the selection and use of fi lm magazines in Chapter 8.
THE MOTOR-DRIVEN EL CAMERA MODELS
The 500ELX and later models have the automatic dedicated fl ash system and a gliding mirror
arrangement. Like those of the earlier EL and ELM models, the 500ELX motor is powered by
rechargeable NiCad batteries.
The 553ELX motor, like the motor in all future models, is powered by fi ve standard AA
batteries instead of the NiCads.
Hasselblad 555ELD for Digital Imaging
The 555ELD has a new heavy-duty motor powered by fi ve AA batteries and a gliding mirror
system with a mirror suspension and a camera release mechanism that was in the space cam-
era design. This camera is ideal for photography with fi lm or for electronic imaging with a
