388 THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL
The panoramic image can be put together from any number of separate images, but the
images must overlap by about 20% and overlap preferably in an area without dominant image
elements.
CAMERA-PRODUCED PANORAMIC IMAGES
While the digital method is probably the approach that you want to use for producing pano-
ramic images, I still feel there is nothing like producing the panoramic image right in the cam-
era where you can see and study the effectiveness of the fi nal image in the viewfi nder and if
necessary re-compose to make the panoramic image visually more exciting. This is possible
with fi lm and the Hasselblad XPan is an ideal tool for this purpose since it produces images
that are 2.7 as wide as high.
XPan CAMERA MODELS
The original XPan camera, introduced in 1998, was superseded in 2003 by the XPan II model
with an LCD viewfi nder display that includes the shutter speed and exposure information,
multi-exposure capability, self-timer delay of 2 seconds or 10 seconds, normal or rear fl ash
sync possibility, and electrical remote release capability (Figure 20-1). The XPan II also has a
Mode button and up/down controls next to the camera LCD (see Figure 20-2). The original
model had only the AEB button. The operating instructions indicated here apply to both mod-
els, unless otherwise mentioned.
