392 THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL
FILM LOADING
Before loading a fi lm, set the ISO dial to DX for DX-coded fi lm, to the desired ISO value for
non-coded fi lms, or if you want to use a different ISO value for a coded fi lm. You must do this
before loading the fi lm because the camera will not transport a non-coded fi lm if the dial is
set to DX. The fi lm loading procedure is shown in Figure 20-5.
Figure 20-5 Loading the fi lm. (1) Open the camera back with the lock on the side of the camera.
(2) The fi lm cassette is properly placed. (3) The beginning of the fi lm is placed against the fi lm
tip indicator with the fi lm lying fl at in the camera. Close the camera back. (4) The ISO dial is
set to DX for coded fi lms or to the fi lm’s sensitivity for other fi lms.
You can program the XPan II camera so that the fi lm rewinds completely into the cas-
sette at the end of the roll or rewinds to leave the fi lm tip out of the cassette by switching
the camera from OFF to S while holding down the Mode button on the camera’s LCD panel.
When the cassette symbol shows up, select OUT, if you want the tip of the fi lm out of the
cassette, or IN, if the fi lm should rewind completely into the cassette. Confi rm the choice by
pressing the release halfway.
When the camera cover is closed after loading the fi lm, the entire roll of fi lm winds to the
take-up spool and the fi lm moves from the take-up back into the cassette while the pictures
are taken. This fi lm transport method differs from typical 35 mm fi lm cameras but has the
advantage that all the exposed XPan pictures are in the light-tight cassette where they cannot
be ruined if the back cover is opened accidentally. You do not have to rewind the fi lm at the
end of a roll.
The fi lm counter shows the number of unexposed frames remaining on the roll of
fi lm. The counter changes automatically when you switch from one format to the other
