The Superwide Cameras 191
Figure 11-7 The Superwide viewfi nder. (1) The fi nder has a built-in spirit level on top. The spirit
level is also visible in the viewfi nder. (2) You can see the leveling of the camera without
removing your eye from the fi nder. A magnifying lens at the bottom lets you read the focusing
distance, the depth-of-fi eld, and the set shutter speed while viewing through the fi nder. The four
lines inside the fi nder show the area coverage vertically and horizontally for the 6 4.5 format.
Figure 11-8 The old Superwide viewfi nder. On earlier Superwide models, the spirit level is on
top of the camera body and is refl ected in the viewfi nder prism so it can be seen from the
normal viewing position behind the camera. Masks are used for the 6 4.5 format.
camera tilt with an extreme wide angle lens like the Biogon records the verticals as slanted lines
and does not maintain ultimate sharpness over the entire area in close-up work such as copying.
Check the built-in spirit level carefully when doing this type of photography. Based on my point
of view that we should always try to record a perfect image in the camera, I recommend this
approach even today when it is possible to straighten verticals in the computer.
FOCUSING THE SUPERWIDE CAMERAS
At longer distances, focusing the Biogon lens by estimating the distance is suffi ciently accu-
rate because the short 38 mm focal length provides considerable depth-of-fi eld. At the maxi-
mum aperture of f/4.5, depthof-fi eld extends from 3 m (10 feet) to infi nity. With the aperture
closed down to f/22, the depth-of-fi eld range is from 26 in. (0.6 m) to infi nity.
