Operating the H Cameras for Digital and
Film Photography
Hasselblad H camera models are basically operated in the same fashion for digital imaging and
fi lm photography, but keep in mind that the H3DII is for digital imaging only and the H2F and
earlier camera models are designed for fi lm photography, but usable with some digital backs.
The H2F is used with fi lm as discussed below and the H3DII is used for digital imaging as dis-
cussed here and in Chapter 5. This chapter addresses the H camera operations that must be
observed and used for producing high quality images in either medium. The necessary special
steps for producing digital images are discussed in Chapter 5. The location and operation of
some of the camera controls may vary slightly depending on the H camera model. If anything
is different from the way it is described in the manual, check the instruction manual for your
particular camera model.
THE H CAMERA SYSTEM CONCEPT
Because the Hasselblad H cameras have the operating features and the automation found
in modern cameras, you can take high quality pictures digitally or on fi lm without learning
much about the camera and lens operations. For the simplest photographic approach set the
camera for automatic focusing and the desired metering mode (Center Spot is my suggestion
for automatic use), set the camera for Programmed Exposure mode. In this mode the camera
is programmed to choose the aperture and shutter speed. Compose the picture, and press the
shutter release. If, on the other hand, you want to decide how each image is to be recorded
in the camera, the H cameras give you complete control over every step in the process. This
is done in a simple, sophisticated fashion that will likely add enjoyment and fascination to
your photographic hobby or profession. You can select your preferred metering and focusing
modes, which provide perfect exposures and maximum image sharpness for specifi c subject
areas and lighting situations. You can program an almost unlimited number of functions and
operations that can simplify your photography, customize the camera operation for your style
of photography, and help you create the results you are trying to produce. With the H cameras
you do not have to match your photographic approach to what the camera can do. Instead,
you program the H camera operations for the way you like to work and for the results you are
trying to achieve. The images that come out of the H camera will satisfy you even more when
