Operating EL Cameras for Digital
and Film Photography
The text here is limited to the operations that apply to EL models only. The operations that
apply to all V system cameras are discussed in other chapters. The newer 500ELX, 553ELX,
and 555ELD models with a dedicated fl ash system are recognized by the fi lm sensitivity dial
above the accessory rail (see Figure 10-1). The fl ash operation is discussed in Chapter 18.
BATTERIES
Starting with the ELX in 1988, EL cameras use fi ve standard 1.5 V alkaline or lithium batteries
that provide up to 4,000 exposures. You can also use rechargeable 1.2 AA NiCad batteries for
1,000 exposures to be recharged in standard AA type recharge units. Insert batteries as shown
in Figure 10-2, which also shows how to check the battery condition.
The NiCad Batteries in Earlier Models
Earlier EL models are powered by rechargeable NiCad batteries. Only one battery is necessary
to drive the camera, and it can be inserted in either opening in the battery compartment. A
fully charged battery should last for about 1,000 exposures at normal temperature. NiCad bat-
teries must be used properly as follows:
1. Insert only one battery into the motor compartment, but keep a second, fully charged battery
readily available.
2. Operate the camera until the mechanism slows down (indicating that the battery is close to
being discharged).
3. Change to a fully charged spare battery, and use this battery as in step 2.
4. Recharge the fi rst battery whenever practical for 14 hours, and keep it as a spare.
