180 THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL
Figure 10-2 Open the battery compartment cover by a full clockwise turn of a coin inserted in
the cover lock. Removing the cover reveals the compartments for fi ve AA batteries and for the
fuse above the motor drive (1), and an empty compartment to store a spare fuse (2). Check
the condition of the alkaline or lithium batteries by pressing the battery check button (3).
When both lights (4) come on, more than 40% of the power remains. One light indicates that
about 20% is left. If neither light comes on, the batteries need to be changed.
OPERATING EL CAMERAS
Releasing 555ELD
In the FILM setting, the front release on the 555ELD operates the camera the same way as the
front release on other EL models (see Figure 10-3). For longer exposures, you must keep your
fi nger on the release until the lens shutter closes. In the DIG position, in addition to operat-
ing the camera cycle, a signal goes to some digital backs via the pins at the rear of the camera
telling the digital back when the exposure starts and ends. This signal works only with a few
digital backs designed for this operation, and, with such a back attached, the FILM release
does not work. The regular FILM release is used with other digital backs. Obtain up-to-date
details from the manufacturer of the digital back or from Hasselblad.
The Operating Selector Dial
EL cameras have a release lock as shown in Figure 10-3 and an operating selector dial that
operates the camera in different modes as shown in Figure 10-4. When the camera is oper-
ated with the selector dial set to SR or AS, the camera stops in the pre-released mode. To put a
camera in the normal viewing position, move the operating dial to 0, and press the release to
take a picture (see Figure 10-4). Remove the fi lm magazine before pressing the release to avoid
wasting a frame of fi lm.
