Operating EL Cameras for Digital and Film Photography 181
Figure 10-3 Releasing the camera. (1) All EL models have two release openings at the front that
serve the same purpose on all models except the 555ELD. On the 555ELD the top opening
is for digital work with some digital backs made for this type of operation and the bottom
opening is for fi lm. (2) The time exposure and locking lever can be set to L to lock the release,
0 for normal operation, or T for time exposures. Moving the lever from 0 to T is like releasing
the camera and making an exposure.
Figure 10-4 The operating selector dial. At the normal (0) setting, one picture is taken, and the
camera stops in the normal position with the mirror down. At S, the camera is pre-released
but returns to the normal position after the picture is made. At SR, the camera is also pre-
released and remains that way after the picture is taken. A is the automatic mode, where the
camera takes pictures at the rate of one frame per second as long as the release is pressed
or as long as fi lm is in the camera and returns to the normal mode. The AS setting is for
automatic operation, starting and ending in the pre-released mode; the camera operates
somewhat faster than in the A position at about 12 pictures in 9 seconds.
If nothing happens when the release is pressed, check that the locking lever is at 0 posi-
tion. Then check that the magazine slide has been removed and the exposure counter in
the magazine has not reached the end of the roll. If none of these checks helps, check the
batteries and perhaps the fuse. A blown fuse usually indicates that something is wrong in the
electrical circuit.
