Close-Up Photography on Film or Digital
CLOSE-UP PHOTOGRAPHY IN DIGITAL IMAGING AND FILM PHOTOGRAPHY
Lenses and close-up accessories form the image on the sensor of a digital camera or digital
back in exactly the same way as they do on fi lm, therefore, the techniques discussed in this
chapter apply whether you work with fi lm or digitally. The image size recorded digitally with
Hasselblad is however different from the image size recorded on fi lm and magnifi cation fac-
tors and everything related to it is therefore also different. This topic is discussed in more
detail at the end of this chapter where I describe the use of the close-up charts.
For successful close-up photography, it is helpful to understand how lenses form the
image in addition to learning how close-up accessories work and how they must be used
to obtain the desired results. Close-up photography, however, also has become easier since
lens technicians can design lenses with internal focusing that allows you to photograph from
infi nity down to life-size magnifi cation without the need for any type of close-up accessories.
The HC Macro 4/120 in the H camera system offers this possibility.
Figure 14-18 in Chapter 14 shows how the lens elements are moved when focusing from
infi nity to the minimum focusing distance. The internal focusing either does not change or
minutely changes the physical length of the lens when focusing, another benefi t of such a
lens design.
LENSES AND ACCESSORIES IN CLOSE-UP PHOTOGRAPHY
If you work with, or plan to purchase the HC 4/120 Macro lens, you do not have to read this
section on extension tubes or consult the close-up charts at the end of the chapter. You can
photograph with this lens from infi nity down to life-size magnifi cation without using any close-
up accessories. Simply compose the image in the viewfi nder, use the automatic focusing to set
the distance, and determine the exposure with the built-in meter as you usually do when you
work digitally or with fi lm. The information in this chapter, however, will be helpful or neces-
sary for successful close-up work with any other lens in the Hasselblad H or V camera system.
All lenses in the Hasselblad H and V system can be focused down to a certain mini-
mum distance, which depends mainly on the lens design and the focal length of the lens.
All of these lenses can be used at closer distances in combination with close-up accessories.
Extension tubes are the recommended accessories for this purpose, because they increase
the image distance by moving the entire lens further from the image plane. The closer you
