128 THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL
The 201F, like the other 200 models, has no metering system and shutter speeds up to
1
/
1000
second adjustable in ½ f stop increments.
THE HASSELBLAD 2000/2003 CAMERA MODELS
Hasselblad introduced these focal plane shutter models mainly to allow using larger aper-
ture lenses such as the 80mm f/2 Planar. These models offer electronically controlled shutter
speeds from
1
/
2000
to 1 second with a focal plane curtain made from very thin titanium. To
prevent accidental damage to the shutter, the later 2000 FCM/FCW and 2003 models include
a safeguard device that retracts the shutter curtain when the magazine is removed. A motor
winder can be attached to 2000 FCW and the 2003 models. Double or multiple exposures can
be made without removing the magazine. The mirror can be made to return instantly after the
exposure or when the fi lm is advanced, or it can be locked up permanently.
THE HASSELBLAD SUPERWIDE CAMERAS
All Superwides, from the earliest models to the latest 905SWC, are built around the Biogon
38 mm f4.5 lens and its 90-degree diagonal angle of view when used for the 2¼ square format
(Figure 6-2).
The Biogon, permanently mounted on a short camera body without refl ex viewing, is
an optically true wide angle design, practically distortion-free with superb corner-to-corner
image quality at close and far distances even with the lens aperture wide open. The Biogon
focuses down to 12 in. (0.3 m), making the Superwide an excellent camera for copying.
The rear of the camera takes the same fi lm magazines as other Hassselblad V system
camera models. Older camera models, however, do not accept the Polaroid fi lm magazine.
The Superwide cameras are not recommended for digital imaging, at least not at larger
apertures and/or with the large 36.7 49 mm sensor. The reasons are described in detail in
Chapter 11.
An optical viewfi nder attaches to the top of the camera. Because the lens has great depth-
of-fi eld — for example, from 26 in. (66 cm) to infi nity at f/22 — you can usually achieve suf-
ciently accurate focusing by visually estimating the distance. However, you can view and
focus the image by attaching a focusing screen adapter in place of the fi lm magazine.
The original camera was called Hasselblad Supreme Wide Angle with fi lm advance and
shutter cocking as two separate operations. The next version, the Hasselblad Superwide C,
was equipped with a Biogon C lens design with fi lm advance and shutter cocking in one oper-
ation. A spirit level built into the top of the camera body with a prism attached to the view-
nder lets you see the level setting from the viewing position. On the Hasselblad 903SWC
the spirit level, on top of the removable viewfi nder, is visible in the viewfi nder together with
the image area covered on the fi lm, which is especially helpful in handheld photography. The
viewfi nder also has a magnifi er at the bottom that allows you to see the distance setting on
the CF lens in the viewfi nder. The Superwide SWC/M models allow attaching the Hasselblad
instant fi lm magazine.
