144 THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL
be your decision. The standard focusing hood cannot be used in any practical way with eye-
glasses. Some fi nders with the older eyepiece can be changed to the newer type. Check with
the Hasselblad service center or on their Web site.
Viewfi nders for Exposure Measurement
The eyelevel fi nder on all H camera models includes the metering system for the camera dis-
cussed in detail in Chapter 4.
Equipping a V camera model with a meter prism viewfi nder adds a built-in light-
metering system to any V system Hasselblad camera. The light is measured through the lens
(TTL) and through fi lters, extension tubes, and bellows. You see the measured area while
composing the image on the focusing screen. These viewfi nders offer a good solution for fast,
convenient TTL exposure metering in digital or fi lm photography. Chapter 15 discusses how
to obtain perfect exposures with these fi nders.
SUGGESTIONS FOR ACCURATE FOCUSING
Viewfi nders are necessary and recommended for viewing and focusing in fi lm and digital
photography because they magnify the fi nder image as shown in Table 7-1. While viewfi nd-
ers magnify the image, any viewfi nder can provide you with a sharp image only if your eyes
can focus for the viewing distance of the fi nder, just as you can read a newspaper only if your
eyes can focus at the reading distance. Test your camera and fi nder by focusing at a subject
with very fi ne detail and do so with or without your glasses depending on whether you plan
to wear them for photography or not. Turn the focusing ring. See whether you can easily see
the details going in and out of focus when you turn the focusing ring slightly beyond the cor-
rect distance setting. Focus a few times to see if you always end up at exactly the same dis-
tance setting on the focusing ring. Test with different lenses if you have them, especially with
wide angles, and also at lower light levels where focusing is more problematic.
Matching the Viewfi nder to your Eyesight
Except for the HVM waist-level fi nder for the H models and the HM2 and RMfx fi nders, all
newer Hasselblad V system viewfi nders have an adjustable eyepiece, as shown in Table 7-1,
to match to your eyesight. The built-in correction ranges shown in Table 7-1 seem to be suf-
fi cient for most photographers. Check whether this is the case with your viewfi nder. If not,
consider changing the eyepiece or magnifying lens if possible.
Adjusting the Built-In Diopter Correction
You must adjust the diopter correction on an adjustable eyepiece to your eyesight before
you start using it.
Because the viewfi nder must provide a sharp image of the focusing screen and not neces-
sarily of the subject, it is best to make the adjustment without a lens on the camera so that
you see nothing but the focusing screen. Adjust the diopter correction until the lines on the
