Projecting Medium-Format Images
MODERN DIGITAL PROJECTION APPROACHES
Projecting transparencies with one slide projector or a number of projectors in the case of
multi-image presentations is an activity of the past, especially for professional presentations.
Photographic images are presented on the screen today with digital projectors which are
more compact, simplify producing an effective slide presentation, and eliminate the time-con-
suming glass mounting of transparencies which was necessary and recommended especially
for medium-format transparencies. A variety of software programs are available and are neces-
sary to put the digital slide program together.
This modern projection method is not limited to images that are produced in a digital
camera or digital back. You can use the same approach and the same projectors for your
present or old images made on transparency fi lm after scanning the images. A slide presen-
tation, therefore, can be produced by combining your latest digital images with images that
you may have taken years ago on fi lm. The new digital projection approach also allows you to
produce presentations that were impossible before or required more than one projector to
accomplish. Slides can be programmed to dissolve into each other, eliminating the need for
at least two projectors and a dissolve control to accomplish this effective transition. You can
combine slides and videos in the same presentation using the same projector. You can also
present your image presentation on the television set, which can be especially effective if you
have a high defi nition (HDTV) set.
Selecting a Digital Projector
Digital projector manufacturers use different approaches to project the image so check the
specifi cations to ascertain that a specifi c model is made for your image type and size. Also have
a close look at the resolution and screen brightness fi gures. Screen brightness, indicated in
lumens, becomes especially important if you plan to project in daylight or in other well-lit areas
rather than a surrounding with subdued light or a completely dark projection room is highly
recommended for projecting transparencies. Digital projectors can present a completely satis-
factory slide show in subdued light.
You also want to check that the lens on the projector provides the desired image size
from a usable distance in your projection setup. A zoom lens offers more fl exibility. Regardless
of what model you chose, be prepared to pay considerably more than you might have paid
for a 35 mm projector some years ago.
