indicating a suffi cient amount of light. If it does not fl icker, you must open the aperture, move
the fl ash closer, or change the ISO. On the 200 model cameras, a fl ickering signal, LO FLASH,
appears on the display immediately after the picture is made, indicating that the fl ash illumina-
tion was insuffi cient. HI FLASH appears on the display if the light is too strong.
FLASH FOR PHOTOGRAPHING PEOPLE OUTDOORS DIGITALLY OR WITH FILM
Electronic fl ash is an ideal light source to combine with daylight. Portraits, fashion shots, pub-
licity pictures, and family snapshots are very beautiful when sunlight is used as a backlight or
sidelight, which places highlights on the hair, the shoulders, the faces and the cheeks of the
people photographed. The contrast between the lighted and shaded areas, however, will usu-
ally not produce a fl attering result. You must reduce the contrast by adding light to the shaded
areas. Electronic fl ash is ideal. It not only lightens the shaded areas but also brings some
light and life into the eyes and improves the colors in people pictures taken in the shade
or in the soft light of an overcast day (see Figure 18-10). When you photograph in the warm
early morning or late afternoon sunlight, place a warming fi lter over the fl ash to match the
warm sunlight. Since most location people pictures are done at larger apertures to blur the
Figure 18-7 Flash settings. With the ISO set on the camera (a), the fl ash dial is set to TTL (b). This
is unnecessary on the Hasselblad D-Flash 40. This unit simply needs to be turned on for either
built-in or external battery use (c). The ready Light/Test button is near the ON/OFF switch (d).
