212 THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL
Figure 12-17 Color harmony. A photograph made visually effective by the combination of blue
and yellow and the completely different lines and textures in the sharp outlines in the boat
and the delicate tree branches on the right. Exposure determined with the D mode of the
built-in meter. (Photo by Ernst Wildi.)
THE ZONE SYSTEM THEORY
The Zone mode, in combination with the precise spot meter in the 205 camera, is the ideal
metering system for black and white photographers working with Ansel Adams’s Zone
System.
An important aspect of Adams’ Zone System theory is the concept of adjusting exposure
and fi lm development so that all the resulting black and white negatives can be printed on
standard-grade paper no matter what the contrast range of the scene might have been. Adams
referred to these adjustments as expansion (increasing contrast) and contraction (lowering
contrast), and he defi ned the adjustments with the so-called N (for contraction) and
N (for expansion). For details, consult Adams’ or other Zone System books.
