192 THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL
Close-Up Photography with the Superwide
The Biogon lens focuses down to 12 in. (0.3 m) with the superb corner-to-corner image
sharpness maintained down to this minimum focusing distance. This makes the Superwide an
excellent tool for distortion-free close-up work, such as copying in fi lm photography. In close-
up work, estimating the distance is not good enough. At the minimum distance, the depth-of-
eld is less than one inch; with the aperture wide open, it is increased to about two inches at
f/22. You can measure the distance from the subject to the fi lm plane mark on the magazine
or, better yet, focus the image visually by using the focusing screen adapter accessory, which
also shows the exact area coverage with view camera precision.
Focusing with the Focusing Screen Adapter
Precise visual focusing with the lens set at any distance is possible by attaching the focusing
screen adapter in place of a fi lm magazine.
The latest focusing screen adapters with the Acute Matte focusing screen provide a bright
image over the entire area. Set the shutter at B and keep it open by placing the release lock to
T. Open the lens aperture fully for most accurate focusing or set it at the selected aperture to
evaluate the fi nal image. You can view the image on the screen through any of the Hasselblad
viewfi nders, which also provide a magnifi ed view of the entire image and at the same time
shield the focusing screen from all extraneous light.
The RMfx fi nder, with its 3.3 magnifi cation, is especially recommended because it
shows the image right side up. The fi nders slide into the grooves on the adapter and are held
in place by a pin on the upper left. To remove the fi nder, push the pin to the left and slide out
the fi nder.
Determining Exposure
A Hasselblad meter prism fi nder attached to the focusing screen adapter can be used to
determine exposure as you normally do on the camera’s focusing screen. I suggest, however,
that you make an exposure test on your Superwide camera to see whether it gives the same
results as on the standard focusing screen. An instant fi lm magazine can also be used.
