38 THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL
focus control, however, is controlled from the camera. The computer mode offers practically
unlimited storage capacity since the images are stored on the computer’s hard drive, but the
limited mobility makes this approach suitable mainly for studio use. Connected to a computer,
the screen and menu system on the sensor unit are disabled.
The live video function is a nice advantage of shooting tethered. Enabling this mode pro-
duces low resolution images on the screen updated approximately every second. A part of
the low resolution image can be enlarged to 100% for critical manual focusing.
Programming the Media
If you are connected to a computer or connected to just one medium, for example hav-
ing a CF card in the camera, the camera automatically selects the medium and shows it on
the menu screen. When connected to several media, for example, if you have a CF card in
the camera but also a FireWire connection to the ImageBank, you must select the media.
Depress the MENU button, go to STORAGE (Figure 3-8A) which brings up the MEDIUM menu
(Figure 3-8B), navigate down to MEDIA and use the or buttons until the blue line is
over the selected media. In Figure 3-8, the blue line is over the CF card. Press OK. When
connected to a computer, the screen and menu system in the camera are disabled. As a short-
cut on the H3D camera models, you can also press the button on the grip that is used for fi lm
wind-off.

Figure 3-8 Navigating the media. When a CF card is in the sensor unit and the unit is also
connected to another medium such as the ImageBank, you must tell the camera which media
to use. Go to MENU, then navigate to STORAGE (A), which brings up the display (B). The blue
line around the CF indicates that the images will be recorded on the CF card.
Formatting
Before you start using a new medium for the fi rst time, a new CF card, or a new ImageBank
element, it is recommended that you format the new unit to allow the sensor unit to use the
media more effi ciently. To format, press MENU and select the media to be formatted. Go to
STORAGE and FORMAT. You will receive a message showing the media to be formatted and
an “are you sure” message. Press OK and you will see the message “formatting.” If you format a
medium that has images on it, the formatting process will delete all the images.
