48 THE HASSELBLAD MANUAL
come equipped with an eye-level viewfi nder, which is beautifully designed for handheld photog-
raphy in the vertical or horizontal format. The viewfi nder HV 90 on most camera models has
a 2.7 magnifi cation and shows the full image area of the 6 4.5 fi lm format. The H3D camera
models have an HVD 90 viewfi nder and a focusing screen that shows only the area of the
36.7 49.0 mm sensor (on the H3D-31 with an edged line on the screen for the smaller sensor).
Because the sensor area is a few millimeters smaller than the 6 4.5 fi lm area, magnifi cation in
the fi nder could be increased to 3.1. The HVD 90 nder can be used for fi lm photography
on the H3D model but there is some vignetting at the bottom of the image. To see the full fi lm
area you need the HV 90 type. The fi nders and operating controls are otherwise identical.
The Acute Matte focusing screen, with the indicated spot meter and automatic focusing
areas, shows 100% of the image recorded on the fi lm or 100% of the area covered on the
36.7 49.0 sensor in the H3D models.
Attaching and Removing Viewfi nders
You can attach or remove both eye-level viewfi nders from the camera without removing the
lm magazine, digital back, or lenses. To remove a fi nder, press the Viewfi nder Release button
(item 35, Figure 4-1), and lift the fi nder upward. To attach a fi nder, hold the fi nder at a slight
angle and slide it forward and downward until it clicks into position. Make certain that it is
locked on both sides.
As the camera’s exposure metering system is in the viewfi nder, the fi nders have elec-
tronic Databus connections at the bottom to transfer data from the camera to the fi nder and
vice versa. The viewfi nders have two Exposure Control buttons on the side of the camera grip
for setting the light-metering mode and for setting exposure compensations.
Removing the Focusing Screen
Unlike on other Hasselblad camera models, the focusing screen is fi rmly held in place and does
not fall out even if you turn the camera upside down after removing the viewfi nder. To remove
