•  Read “Installation Guidelines” on page 45 and “Safety inspection checklist” on page 46 to ensure that you 
work safely.
•  Power off the server and disconnect all power cords for this task.
•  Prevent exposure to static electricity, which might lead to system halt and loss of data, by keeping static- 
sensitive components in their static-protective packages until installation, and handling these devices with 
an electrostatic-discharge wrist strap or other grounding system.
Before removing the fan board: 
1.  Remove the top cover. See 
“Remove the top cover” on page 212.
2.  Remove system fans. See 
“Remove a system fan” on page 209.
3.  Disconnect the fan board power cable and sideband cable. See 
“Power/Sideband cable routing” on 
page 244
.
4.  Disconnect any cables that might impede your access to the fan board. Before cable disconnection, 
record where the cables are connected to the system board. See 
Chapter 6 “Internal cable routing” on 
page 217
.

Step 1.  Remove the screw from the small air baffle.
Step 2. 
Gently grasp the Small air baffle and carefully lift it out of the system board tray.
Step 3. 
Remove the four screws and the lift handle from the fan board.
Step 4. 
Gently hold and lift the fan board from the system board tray.
If you are instructed to return the old fan board, follow all packaging instructions and use any packaging 
materials that are provided.
