Selectingthebestoperatingfrequency
TheFrequencyfunctionisusedtocontrolthecentrefrequencyoftheacoustictransmissions
(pings).Thecentrefrequencycanbechangedfrom14to24kHzinstepsof1kHz.Alltypes
ofnoisematterwhenyouwishtondthebestoperatingfrequency.
Context
Alowerfrequencygivesyouabetterdetectionrangebecausetheattenuationlossissmaller.
Ahigherfrequencygivesyoubetterrangeresolution.Ahigherfrequencyalsogivesyou
narrowerbeamsanda"sharper"image".
Noisefrominternalandexternalsourceshaveanimpactonthechoiceofoperating
frequency.Onespecicfrequencymayperformbetterthantheothersonyourvessel.To
measurethenoiselevel,observethevaluepresentedontheNoisepageintheBITEdialog
box.
Werecommendthatyoudothistesttwice.First,dothetestwithallotherhydroacoustic
systems(echosounders,ADCP,sonars)turnedoff.Second,dothetestwithnormal
operatingconditions.Thisallowsyoutoseehowtheotherhydroacousticsystemsaffect
theST90operation.
