3.5.4 Cross Device Network Configuration

In this scenario the controller needs to communicate with an acquisition device that is not on the
same physical network as the controller. Cases like this would include the device being at a different
location, or that the device handles sensitive data and cannot be on the controller network, or that
networking on the controller’s network interferes with the device’s ability to function. In these and
other examples, a network router must be added as a gateway to handle traffic to the external
network. The controller is configured to use the router as a gateway to communicate to the modem
that is located on the external network. This allows a physical separation of the controller
networking from the modem’s network.
