Installation and Operation of the DCS 350 and DHS 1100 Chambers
DOC-M88-EXX268_V1_12.2016 81
1. If this works successfully, you can start automatic measurements as described in your
temperature controller manual and in the manuals for DIFFRAC.SUITE [4] and
WIZARD [5].
2. Check box to wait for temperature reached before starting the scan.
Without temperature dependent height correction, peak positions might be wrong for
temperature >25°C (alignment temperature).

8.6 Alignment
Due to their mounting on top of normal sample stages, instead of in the center of the go-
niometer, and because of the additional degrees of freedom provided by mounting on a
Eulerian cradle, alignment of domed stages requires a slightly different alignment ap-
proach from the one given in chapter Adjustment of a Chamber on the D8 [}35].
8.6.1 Aligning the Chamber for Automated Height Correction
Dome chambers are generally mounted to a Eulerian Cradle, XYZ- or UMC stage. These
mounting bases include a Z-drive which allows the chamber height to be automatically
corrected for e.g. thermal expansion of the sample holder. This requires a determination of
chamber height for a number of temperatures as described below. The fastest method to
determine the sample height is to run a Z-scan in the direct beam (sufficiently attenuated
<10000cps) at theta=detector=0° followed by a Rocking curve scan, maybe repeatedly.
The correct Z-position is at the half maximum intensity. You must wait for all parts to warm
up, before the Z-position can be determined, which may take several minutes.
It is assumed that the diffractometer is aligned. The sample should be in the sample
holder. The Z-position (in case of a single crystal or for other reasons also Psi-, Theta and
Two Theta) values should be optimized at 25 °C. A rotary absorber is highly recom-
mended for this setup. In case of LYNXEYE detectors the 0Dmode (also in 90° orientation
in combination with a detector slit) is used for alignment.
