Controls in detail
Starting the engine
E Turn the key to position 2 in the igni-
tion lock.
The % pre-glow indicator lamp in
the instrument cluster comes on.
E As soon as the % pre-glow indicator
lamp goes out, turn the key to
position 3
in the ignition lock and re-
lease it as soon as the engine is run-
ning.
i You can start the engine without pre-glow
when the engine is warm.
i Depending on the vehicle equipment, the ve-
hicle is automatically locked centrally either
when the ignition is switched on or when you pull
away. The locking knobs in the doors drop down.
You can open the doors from the inside at any
time.
Automatic door locking can also be deactivated
(
e page 59).
! Only drive at high speeds once the engine
has warmed up. Running a cold engine at high
engine speeds may shorten the service life of the
engine.
When driving on slippery surfaces, avoid spin-
ning the drive wheels where possible as this
could damage the drive train.
i After pulling away or switching on the igni-
tion, the vehicle automatically locks centrally.
The locking knobs in the doors drop down.
You can open the doors from the inside at any
time.
Automatic door locking can also be deactivated
(
e page 59).
E Depress the brake pedal and keep it
depressed.
The selector lever lock is released.
E Release the handbrake.
The c indicator lamp in the instru-
ment cluster goes out.
! Only select reverse gear when the vehicle is
stationary; otherwise, you could damage the au-
tomatic transmission.
E Move the selector lever to position D or
R.
i On vehicles with a reverse warning feature,
an audible warning sounds for other road users
when reverse gear is engaged (
e page 133).
E Release the brake pedal.
E Carefully depress the accelerator ped-
al.
i Automatic transmission upshifts are made
at higher engine speeds after a cold start. This
helps the catalytic converter to reach its operat-
ing temperature more quickly.
You will find more information about selec-
tor lever positions, shift ranges and driving
tips in the "Automatic transmission" sec-
tion (e page 108).
Do not accelerate to prevent your vehicle
from rolling backwards on an uphill gradi-
ent. Instead, you should either use the
handbrake or depress the brake pedal.
This prevents excessive wear on the
clutch.
Pulling away
G Warning
Do not downshift for additional engine brak-
ing on a slippery surface. The drive wheels
may lose their grip and the vehicle could skid.
Your vehicle's ABS will not prevent this type
of loss of control.
Braking
G Warning
There is no power assistance for the service
brake when the engine is not running.
You will need to use significantly more force
to brake and could therefore lose control of
the vehicle and cause an accident.
Never switch off the engine while driving.
