Bleeding the fuel system

Practical hints
E Close drain plug 2 as soon as approx-
imately 0.2 US qt (0.2 l) of liquid has
been collected.
i The electric fuel delivery pump stops the
flow of liquid automatically after 30 seconds.
E When you have drained the fuel filter
with water separator, turn the key back
to position 0 in the ignition lock.
E Dispose of the collected liquid in an en-
vironmentally responsible manner.
E Drain the fuel filter again if the : in-
dicator lamp remains lit.
! If the : indicator lamp remains lit even
after draining for the second time, have the
cause checked immediately at an authorized
Sprinter Dealer.
If the fuel tank has been run dry, there is a
possibility that the engine may not start
immediately after refueling because air
may remain in the fuel system.
i Too many attempts to start the engine could
drain the battery.
E After refueling: turn the key to
position 2 in the ignition lock for ap-
proximately 10 seconds.
E Start the engine repeatedly for no more
than 60 seconds until it runs smoothly.
If the engine does not start:
E Wait approximately 2 minutes.
E Then start the engine repeatedly again
for no more than 60 seconds until it
runs smoothly.
If this attempt also fails, do not continue to
start the engine. Consult an authorized
Sprinter Dealer.
In the event of a malfunction, it is possible
to manually release the selector lever from
the lock in parking position P, for example
to have the vehicle towed away.
E Remove cover cap 1.
E Insert a pencil 2 or similar implement
into the opening.
E Press pencil 2 in and at the same time
move the selector lever out of
position P.
E Pull out pencil 2.
E Clip cover cap 1 back on.
H Environmental note
Have the drained liquid disposed of at an
authorized Sprinter Dealer.
