Practical hints
You will find safety-relevant information on
tires and wheels in the "Operation" section
(
e page 165).
E Park the vehicle as far away as possible
from traffic and on a level, firm, and
non-slip surface.
E Switch on the hazard warning lamps.
E Apply the handbrake.
E Move the selector lever to position P.
E Any passengers should leave the vehi-
cle, ensuring that they are not endan-
gered as they do so.
E Place the warning triangle or road haz-
ard lamps at a suitable distance.
Observe legal requirements.
Preparing the vehicle
Prepare the vehicle as described
(e page 253).
E Prevent the vehicle from rolling away.
Use the wheel chock (e page 205) or
similar aid to do this.
On a level road:
E Place the chocks in front of and behind
the wheel diagonally opposite to the
wheel that is to be changed.
E Take the vehicle tool kit and the jack
from the footwell on the co-driver's
side (e page 204).
G Warning
Vehicles not equipped with Tire Pressure
Monitoring System (TPMS):
For safety reasons, we recommend that you
use only Schrader tire valves. These have
been tested for use on your vehicle.
Use only tire valves of type:
O TR 600 for the vehicle model 2500
O TR 418 for the vehicle model 3500
Using tire valves from any other manufactur-
er could lead to a loss in tire pressure and im-
pair driving safety.
Preparing the vehicle
Changing a wheel
G Warning
To avoid the risk of serious or even fatal injury
and to avoid damage to the vehicle, observe
the following:
O the jack is only designed to raise the ve-
hicle for a short time when changing a
wheel on a level raod.
O position the jack under the appropriate
jacking point only (
e page 254). Check
that the jack is correctly seated under the
jacking point before raising the vehicle.
O the jack must be placed on a firm, level
surface.
O before raising the vehicle, also secure it
against rolling away, by using chocks or
similar aids. Never release the handbrake
while the vehicle is raised.
O make sure that the distance between the
underside of the tires and the ground
does not exceed 1.2 in (3 cm). The vehi-
cle could slip or topple off the jack.
O do not reach under the raised vehicle
with your hands or feet.
O do not start the engine and avoid creating
other vibrations while the vehicle is
jacked up. The vehicle could slip off the
jack.
G Warning
The vehicle could slip off the jack on uphill
and downhill gradients.
To avoid the risk of causing serious or fatal in-
jury, or damage to the vehicle, do not change
wheels on uphill and downhill gradients.
